Discovery Museum Takes Steps Towards a Sustainable Future
SDC Energy was excited to participate in a recent solar project at the Discovery Museum in Acton, Massachusetts, outside of Boston.
The museum provides a hands-on learning environment for children that blends science, nature, and play — inspiring families to explore and experiment.
The museum’s commitment to reducing CO2 emissions and positively impacting climate change drove the organization's decision to produce electricity with solar panels.
“We wanted to demonstrate to our audience and community that they too, can be a part of this change. Simply put, if we want to produce the next generation of environmental stewards, we need to act on our goals, not just talk about them,” said Neil Gordon, CEO of the Discovery Museum.

The Outcome
The project proved mutually beneficial for the Discovery Museum, the investor, and CollectiveSun, an organization that helps make solar a reality for nonprofits.
The museum received discounted financing, while the investor received tax savings — both essential elements in the decision-making process.
Charles Schaffer, president of SDC Energy, said, "This project demonstrates the significant community benefit that an investor can have by simply redirecting their tax dollars to dramatically impact the bottom line of the Museum, not just for one year, but for the next 20 years that the solar equipment will be operating."
The museum's CEO said the project met all its expectations, and the solar panels represent a visible, meaningful sign of hope for the students.
